Identity is a rapidly maturing area with proliferation of writing and a recent consolidation of standards. With major players (Microsoft, IBM, Novell, Liberty Alliance) taking a stance and grassroots campaigns gaining momentum and credibility, a picture of an identity metasystem is beginning to form. While the final outcome is uncertain, it is widely accepted that the existence of an interoperable, user-centric identity system is vital to enable trusted transactions in a distributed environment especially one as vast and important as the internet.

Though many participants in the metasystem are being designed to be interoperable, and they can be made to work together, they do not necessarily work together inherently.
